Information about the most recent Annual EAEPE Pre-Conferences is available below.
Pluralist Perspectives on Digital Technologies and Societal Transformation
The 11th Annual Pre-Conference for Young Scholars
Athens (Greece), September 23, 2025, directly before the Annual EAEPE Conference
organized by
EAEPE and INET YSI Philosophy of Economics Working Group
EAEPE seeks to institutionalize and deepen the involvement of and the exchange with young scholars and student initiatives at the association’s annual conference. One of the key forums for young scholars at EAEPE is the annual pre-conference that comprises a series of workshops by distinguished scholars, accompanied by social space to interact and network. Organized by a team of young scholars, the pre-conference was first launched in Genova (2015). This year, EAEPE and the Philosophy of Economics Working Group of the INET YSI are putting their forces together to organize the 11th pre-conference workshop which will be held on 23 September 2025 in Athens.
We are pleased to announce the following talks:
Environmental Intelligence: AI for a Diverse Society
By Sabina Leonelli (Technical University of Munich)
Political economy vs. evolutionary perspectives on (digital) technology and innovation
By George Liagouras (University of the Aegean)
Media Discourses, Digital Capitalism, and the Struggle for Socio-Ecological Futures
By Hendrik Theine (Johannes Kepler University Linz)
The purpose of this year’s EAEPE YSI pre-conference workshop is to explore pluralist perspectives on digital technologies, and to bring them together on a common ground. Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are reshaping our society at an unprecedented pace, sparking debates and discussions across disciplines and opening up spaces to analyze existing social challenges in a new light. But the discourse surrounding digital technologies is too fragmented in different strands of disciplines such as standard economics, political economy approaches, and Science and Technology Studies (STS) without a common framework clear of ambiguities. Bridging these perspectives is both timely and necessary. The pre-conference speakers and participants will reflect on how different strands of disciplines can be integrated or contrasted to provide a more nuanced understanding of digital technologies and their role for societal transformation.
Following the talks, participants will have the chance to participate in group discussions. Furthermore, there will be a get-together session where young scholars will introduce themselves and their research interests and get the chance to get feedback from and pair up with other young and senior scholars. Coffee break, lunch, and a social dinner will provide further space to connect and warm up for the main conference.
All pre-conference participants are warmly invited to participate at EAEPE’s main conference.

Power of economics without power in economics?
organized by EAEPE and Philosophy of Economics Working Group of the INET YSI
12th September 2023, Leeds, UK
in advance of the
35th Annual Conference of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy
13th – 15th September 2023
What is the Pre-Conference for Young Scholars?
EAEPE seeks to institutionalize and deepen the involvement of and exchange with young scholars and student initiatives at the association’s annual conference. One of the key forums for young scholars at EAEPE is the annual pre-conference that comprises a series of workshops by distinguished scholars, accompanied by social space to interact and network. Organized by a team of young scholars, the pre-conference was first launched in Genova (2015). This year, EAEPE and the Philosophy of Economics Working Group of the INET YSI are putting their forces together to organize the 9th Pre-conference Workshop which will be held on September 12th in Leeds, UK.
What we planned for this year
This year’s Pre-Conference Workshop will center around the topic of power: Power relations dominate most social and economic processes. Despite its significance, however, the concept of power is either neglected or limited in standard economics. This leads to blind spots regarding the link between capitalism and crises, like the climate crisis, the future of work and gender inequality. Moreover, the power dynamics in access to and within the discipline of economics reinforce and favor the entrenchment in existing ideas and, therefore, provoke an epistemological crisis in economics. How, then, can economics be powerful in understanding, explaining and, ideally, tackling the multiple crises of our time without embedding the concept of power in its analysis?
Programme
The Pre-Conference Workshop will host a day of inspirational talks by invited speakers to address the dimensions of power in relation to ecology, the future of work and gender. We are pleased to announce the following talks:
- On Power and Ecology: Franklin Obeng-Odoom (University of Helsinki, Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science)
- On Power and Gender: Melissa Langworthy (Independent Researcher and Senior Gender Expert for EU-GCC Political Dialogue, Cooperation, and Outreach program)
- On Power and the Future of Work: Charlie Dannreuther (Leeds University, School of Politics and International Studies)
Following the talks, participants will have the chance to part-take in group discussions on the future of the discipline of economics, the role of power therein and potential approaches to jointly analyze power relations, crisis tendencies and economic outcomes. Furthermore, there will be a get-together session where young scholars will introduce themselves and their research interests and get the chance to get feedback from and pair up with other young and senior scholars. Coffee break, lunch, and a social dinner will provide further space to connect and warm up for the main conference.
All pre-conference participants are warmly invited to participate at EAEPE’s main conference as well.
Registration to the Pre-Conference
Participation in the pre-conference (including all meals and social dinner) are free of charge for those who registered for the main conference.

There is a Special Rate Membership for PhD and Master students.
Pre-conference registration opens on May 15, 2023, and closes on June 15, 2023. Please note that registration is not a confirmation of participation, but an application. You will receive a notification of acceptance per email by the pre-conference organizers around June 20.
Financial support

Towards an Automated and Digitalized Economy and Society
6 September 2022
Naples, Italy
at the 34th Annual Conference of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy
What is the Pre-Conference for Young Scholars?
The EAEPE seeks to institutionalize and deepen the involvement of and exchange with young scholars and student initiatives at the association’s annual conference. One of the key forums for young scholars at EAEPE is the annual pre-conference that comprises a series of workshops by distinguished scholars, accompanied by social space to interact and network. This year, we invite young scholars to join the 8th pre-conference that will be held on September 6th in Napoli, Italy.
What we planned for this year
Automated decision-making systems, and automation in general, increasingly take over the tasks that previously belonged to humans. They mediate many social, economic, and political processes; therefore, their impact on different areas requires critical investigation. This year, EAEPE Pre-Conference will host a day of inspirational talks by invited speakers to address the impact of automation on our economies and societies. Following the talks, a workshop will take place about imagining our future in such automated societies, their challenges, and potential solutions to them. There will then be a get-together session where young scholars will introduce themselves and their research interests and get chance to get feedback from and pair up with other young and senior scholars. Coffee break, lunch, and a social dinner will provide further space to connect and warm up for the main conference.

Triple Crisis and the Alternative Futures: Research meets Policy
1 September 2021 ONLINE
at the 33rd Annual Conference of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy
2 – 4 September 2021 ONLINE
What is the Pre-Conference for Young Scholars?
The EAEPE seeks to institutionalize and deepen the involvement of and exchange with young scholars and student initiatives at the association’s annual conference. One of the key forums for young scholars at EAEPE is the annual pre-conference that comprises a series of workshops by distinguished scholars, accompanied by social space to interact and network. Organised by a team of young scholars, pre-conference was first launched in Genova (2015). This year, we invite young scholars to join the 7th pre-conference that will be held online and in an entirely different format as compared to its previous editions.
What we planned for this year
This year we will host a simulation exercise to discuss and propose alternative futures, in terms of research and policy relevance, as possible ways out of the ongoing ‘triple crisis’ of modern capitalism. The financial, climate, and health crises reveal the multitude of cracks in how our societies are organised and governed. In addition, the COVID health crisis made many inequalities and disparities particularly visible. Tackling these problems requires a lot of re-thinking, including how research- and policy-making communities interact.
We are pleased to have two senior policy experts with us this year:
![]() |
Mafini Dosso (European Commission’s Joint Research Center)Mafini Dosso, PhD, works as an economist and policy analyst at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Seville, Spain. The JRC provides scientific evidence to inform the EU policy cycle in various fields of decision making. Mafini is leading the project ‘Smart Specialisation Strategies with sub-Saharan Africa’, with an exploratory science for policy activity on Rwanda. It mainly aims at the identification of the pre-requirements in terms of policy, governance, and evidence for the development of a smart specialisation roadmap in Rwanda (an innovative and informal African economy). Mafini has about 10 years of experience, working at the science and policy interface on topics such as innovation and industry dynamics, technological change, intellectual property, smart specialisation, innovation networks and value chains, industry 4.0, and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) agenda of the UN. Initially, she was dedicated to the elaboration of R&D statistics and analyses on the worldwide leading innovating firms. During the last five years, Mafini has been producing evidence to support the African Union-European Union cooperation in the area of STI and to improve the evidence basis on the specific dynamics of innovation systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Her latest co-edited book gathers more than 25 authors from Africa and Europe to discuss the issues of Entrepreneurship, Technology Commercialisation, and Innovation Policy in Africa. |

Richard Kozul-Wright (UNCTAD)Richard Kozul-Wright is Director of the Globalisation and Development Strategies Division in United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). He has worked at the United Nations in both New York and Geneva. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Cambridge UK and has published widely on economic issues including, inter alia, in the Economic Journal, the Cambridge Journal of Economics, The Journal of Development Studies, and the Oxford Review of Economic Policy. His latest book is the Resistible Rise of Market Fundamentalism (with Paul Rayment) and he has also edited volumes on Transnational Corporations and the Global Economy, Economic Insecurity and Development, Securing Peace, Climate Protection and Development, and Industrial Policy. Most recently, he co-edited, Transforming Economies: Making Industrial Policy Work for Growth, Jobs and Development, with the International Labour Organization (ILO). |
How you can contribute
To simulate this interaction we invite young scholars and early career EAEPE members to submit their proposals on how they would contribute to this exercise. Please submit your letter of interest (200-300 words) with some brief information about yourself, your research area, and one concrete suggestion on how would you advice policy-makers in a particular area/domain towards an alternative future: an alternative healthcare, research infrastructure, community-oriented banking, climate-related education, or racial and gender non-discrimination, or development strategies and global governance. Remember that policy-makers are very interested in your proposal and therefore please make it brief but informative. You will have the chance to develop it further during the actual exercise. The policy makers sit on various levels – local, national and supranational (EU) – so you may address any jurisdiction of your choice. Submissions should be sent via email to the Pre-Conference Team (eaepe.preconference@gmail.com) by 15 August 2021 (extended).
What will happen during the pre-conference
Format-wise, the Pre-Conference will kick off with a few inspirational talks led by senior experts that will set the ambitious tone of the overall simulation exercise. Participants then will be allocated to interdisciplinary teams in order to expand ideas and formulate concrete policy proposals for an alternative future(s). The teams will have the task to structure proposals following scientific reasoning/method while directly addressing given socio-economic problems/challenges. Groups will reconvene at the joint plenary discussion where alternative futures will be presented and evaluated by the senior experts. Overall, this exercise aims to simulate how research and scientific evidence can be translated into policy-related expert advice. The programme will be updating, preliminary version below.

Young Scholars Pre-Conference
29th Annual Conference of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy
Budapest, Hungary: 19-21 October 2017
Pre-Conference: 18-19 October 2017
The European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE) welcomes young scholars of all levels (students – early Post-Docs) who are involved in or want to learn more about pluralist, heterodox, real world-oriented, and/or interdisciplinary research. Young scholars are invited to submit papers for presentation at the annual meeting, but could also participate with own paper presentations. In addition, we invite interested students and young researchers to join us for the Young Scholars Pre-Conference.
Young Scholars Pre-Conference
Prior to the annual EAEPE conference in Budapest in October 2017, young researchers and students are welcome to attend seminars and workshops in a series of pre conference workshops. The workshops will last between three and six hours and will be held over a period of two half days. Participants will be assigned a few reading materials prior to the pre-conference to facilitate the workshops and to help sustain the network.
The promotion of young researchers in the arena of critical pluralistic, non-orthodox and interdisciplinary research in today’s world is of prominent importance. As teaching and research outside ‘mainstream’ economics continues to be exceptional in most European countries, it remains important for us to organize and promote such seminars, workshops, and coordinated trainings. EAEPE as a longstanding pluralist association and a prominent actor in this field is thus an excellent support institution for young scholars in order to promote new economic thinking.

Government Failure: Institutions for Development by Wilfred Dolfsma (Loughborough University London)
Institutions are important for (economic) development, and government is responsible for setting many of them. In setting formal institutions relevant for economic activities, a government can fail – and this will be explained. In addition, however, a government can set formal institutions that aim at other domains that inadvertently impact the economy in a negative manner. What is more, informal institutions impact the economy as well.
Workshops
Pluralism and inter-disciplinarity by Catherine Laurent (French National Institute for Agronomic Research)
A convergent set of observations demonstrates the difficulties met by scientists to produce interdisciplinary knowledge adequate to answer -at the relevant scales- the questions raised by sustainable development. On the other hand, recent advances regarding the plurality of science (e.g. Cartwright 1999, Keller et al 2006) have shown that all disciplines include different theoretical approaches. An explicit recognition of the plurality of theoretical approaches within each discipline (economics, ecology, sociology…) changes the way to consider interdisciplinarity. It may allow the scientists to better control the conceptual implications of their collaborations across disciplines and the policy makers to better understand the specific blind spots associated with each theoretical approach and its results. The presentation will illustrate the stakes of this debate. It will be based on the case of the collaboration between ecology and economics. It will include a short review of the ways to define the notions of “discipline” and “interdiscipline”, an insight into the plurality of theoretical approaches within ecology and economics, and a discussion of the consequences of this pluralism for the collaboration between scientists and for policy making.
Agent Based-Stock Flow Consistent Modelling by Alessandro Caiani (Marche Polytechnic University)
The workshop aims at introducing students to the logic, methodology, and practice of Agent Based-Stock Flow Consistent macroeconomic modelling. We will first discuss the main features, advantages, and limitations of the two methodologies taken in isolation, and the possible synergies arising from their combination. A brief overview of the main contributions in the nascent AB-SFC literature will then serve to introduce the logic of AB-SFC modeling, and the challenges ahead. The second part of the workshop will be practice-oriented, being geared around the live construction of a simplified AB-SFC model. Through this laboratory students will start to learn how to design, develop, analyse, and display these models using R, an open source programming language and data-analysis software
Development Economics by Rainer Kattel (University College London & Tallinn University of Technology)
The workshop is centred over ‘high development theory’ and classical development economists, P. Rosenstein-Rodin, A. Hirschman, R. Nurkse, G Myrdal, H. Singer, R. Prebish, and their intellectual legacy in development economics. Whether or not these ideas were translated into respective policy decisions, either successfully or not, will be also part of the discussion in relation to the role of technological change in economic development, financing of development, terms of trade, patterns of economic growth and the role of state therein. The workshop will also touch upon contemporary relevance of classical development theories in regards to developing and emerging economies as well as issues of economic integration.
Long Story Short: The Migrant Question in Europe by Rinus Penninx (University of Amsterdam)
This workshop will provide participants with a historical, comparative, and analytical understanding of migration and integration in Europe, and of the core questions that are frequently asked today. A range of topics are presented in three sub-sessions, each of which will last an hour:
- Post-war migration and migration regimes in Europe,
- Conceptualizing integration and analyzing integration policies,
- Migrant workers in Europe and the role that trade unions play in their integration.
Feminist Economics by Andrea Petö (Central European University)
The workshop offers hands on exercises using qualitative and quantitative methods how to spot what gender does in social relations. It starts with a short introduction to different gender studies methodologies and continues with analysis of examples. Participants are encouraged to bring their own puzzling excerpts/data/examples for the workshop.
Young Scholar Papers at the Main Conference
Young Scholars and students are invited to present research papers in the regular paper sessions at the main conference. Conference sessions are organized according to EAEPE’s Research Areas, to a special conference topic, and a number of special sessions.
